Santorini is a crescent moon shaped island, the southernmost of the Cycladic chain in the Aegean Sea. The island’s spectacular geography is due to an extensive history of volcanic activity. An eruption over 3,500 years ago resulted in 2 additional smaller islands to form, now known as Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni. The islands are great for a day trip, and are easily reached by boat from Fira, the main town of Santorini. A boat trip is also an ideal way to appreciate the sunsets, widely regarded as among the most beautiful in the world. The island has a history which stretches back thousands of years. The museums of Prehistoric Thera and the Archaeological museum, both located in Fira, showcase artwork and sculptures thousands of years old. The nightlife on the island is excellent; Erythrou Staurou Street in Fira, known locally as Bar Street, is a great place to start.

The climate, the island itself, the people, it just combines to give almost the perfect holiday destination. Santorini is not a big island, and you can easily explore it in a car or on an ATV which are cheap and easily available. Fira the main town is built on a cliff (caldera) and the views are amazing. Sit out in one of the many bars and sip a cocktail while looking at the sunset. Kamari on the opposite side of the island has a lovely black beach and more of a 'resort' feel to it. There is plenty to do in Santorini, boat trips to the Volcano and Hot Springs (reommended) and great jewellary and leather shops. At nighttime its pleasantly buzzing, no-one trying to drag you into bars with cheap shots and no-one roaring drunk, but there are good bars and plenty of people about. Santorini is the type of place you would return to more than once!close

The hotel was in a great location and Freddie was there to pick us up from the ship, even without asking, and dropped us back when we were leaving. Santorini is pretty much all it\'s cracked up to be. It\'s absolutely gorgeous, and has a great mix of things to do... phsyical activities (hiking the caldera, exploring the island, etc.), relaxing activities (sitting in the beach), and of course your standard tourist shopping, etc....more Santorini is pretty much all it\'s cracked up to be. We visited in February, and learned that very few people actually LIVE on the island. Even the shop owners live elwhere and just come to the island for the high season, so the island is one big ghost town during the winter. Which is unfortunate, considering the weather was lovely, even in early February, so it\'s a shame that we couldn\'t enjoy many of the shops & activitiies due to them all being closed. Nevertheless, it\'s such a beautiful place that you can easily relax & do nothing for a few days and still have a great time.close

Not a place to visit in winter unless you are there just to see the architecture without the crowds. Many places were closed, which is quite unfortunate because there were a number of tourists still on the island. You have to rent a car to get around, otherwise, its pretty much impossible. I would not recommend this place during winter.close

Beaches not as stunning as other islands but the phenomena of the black volcanic sand makes you understand the natural disaster suffered hundreds of years ago have made this island unique. the way the villages on the caldera are built take your breath away.close

I just loved this island! Definitely one of the most beautiful islands in the Cyclades. The hotel I stayed in was in Perissa( South of the island), perfect location for the beach and the nightlife ( loads of bars and nightclubs serving cheap cocktails-only 3euro!). Fira is overlooking the Caldera and is famous for it's magnifcent views- especially the sunset. Oia is located on the northern tip of the island and is also famous for its spectacular sunsets ( I preferred Oia to Fira as less touristic and with more character).close

It was amazing! Everyone should get an ATV. they are only 20 euro for 24 hours and they are a great way to see the island...also take a donkey ride up the volcano! its awesome! I was unfortunate to book a tour with Ankor Tour System to save time. At the end of the tour, because of misinformation given to me by the tour company, I missed the bus that supposed to bring me back to Perissa. It is frustrating and frightening to try to find transportation back to my hotel in the dark. I do not recommend booking any tours with Ankor Tour System! and let the buyer beware.close

    Elkaza is a small complex recently created according the traditional architecture of the island and respecting the modern amenities of the guests. In a walking distance of 400 meters you can find the main attractions of the capital (museums, cable car, old port, Caldera area, wineries, shopping center, bus station)

        A small taverna that serves traditional Greek cuisine cooked by the chef Vangelis Roussos, who uses his grandfathers and mothers recipes. The painting located around the restaurant were all painted by Vangelis as well.

    Aktaion is a traditional Greek restaurant at the church in Firostefani just beside Vanilia. There is a small menu offering variations on local dishes. Try the moussaka. Again this restaurant has lovely views so try to get a table out on the pathway to really appreciate it.

    Delicious, crepes, waffles, coffees and fresh juices. We went there almost every day for breakfast. The veggie crepe with greek sauce is yummy as is the waffle with maple syrup. Fresh orange juice is tasty and refreshing. Great staff!

        The perfect place to have a beer and watch the sunset from the bars balcony and it is also a great bar to start your night out in Santorini.

    Great bar in Fira. Probably the best place to go, we thought it was much better than Murphys. Nice terrace if you want to have a couple of cocktails. Drinks are pricey enough but then Santorini is not cheap. The DJ plays good music so its a great place for a boogie and he will play anything you request.
